San Ignacio, Cayo District

San Ignacio is located on the far western border of the country.  This area of Belize is so different from the costal towns and islands.  It is far less of a tourist town, but so rich in history and Mayan culture.  Xuantunich Mayan ruins is a few  miles outside of town and one of the biggest attractions of the area.

On Saturday, the local farmers market attracts tourists and locals from miles around.  The local Mennonite community from Spanish Lookout has several booths with fresh baked goods, homemade jams and sauces.

While visiting the area, we found a wonderful jungle lodge just on the outskirts of San Ignacio town.  Maya Mountain Lodge & Wellness center.  Offering superb service in their onsite restaurant, relaxing pool in the jungle setting and a staff that is first class.  Cabanas are nestled in the jungle with awesome walking trails that connect to the restaurant and wellness center.  Cooking classes, area tours and an array of services in the wellness center makes this the perfect location for a trip to the Cayo district.
